For my Master’s I examined the opinions of both IBI program and school staff of the ideal transition process and compared this to their actual experience of transition. My doctoral dissertation will expand on the results of this study. I have chosen transition as my area of concentration due to the importance of this process for children with autism. I am planning on following a group of children with autism, both high and low functioning, transitioning from IBI programs into the school system. I will address three main research questions: the specific process of transition experianced by these children, the ability of children with autism to generalize skills learned in IBI to the school setting and what contextual variables (i.e., integrated versus segregated classrooms, student-teacher ratio, teacher experience, etc.) are associated with children’s generalization and continued learning (versus other outcomes).
